A riot in a high-security prison in Tajikistan that began on Wednesday night has left more than 25 dead and six wounded, security sources in the Central Asian republic reported.”
Two guards died and six others were injured and now they are hospitalized without their lives being in danger,” a spokesman for the local security forces told the RIA Novosti agency.
The source added that the number of deaths among inmates in the prison amounts to ” about 25 people .”The mutiny took place last night in a prison in Juyand, the second city of Tajikistan, located in the northern part of the country.
According to preliminary information, one of the inmates snatched the gun from a guard and started firing at other agents. Then other prisoners with knives joined him and soon they took control of one of the jail pavilions.
To quell the riot, riot police arrived at the prison, where people convicted of serious crimes are found. Some of the inmates managed to escape during the riot caused by the riot, according to the Russian radio station Radio Svoboda.
The investigators are now working to establish the causes of the prison revolt. Meanwhile, Tajikistan authorities have not yet commented on the incident in Juyand prison
